Background Information
The Acceleration Program, 5G@EndTech, is developed under the leadership of the Ministry of Industry and Technology in collaboration with the Presidential Investment Office, KOSGEB, TÜBTAK TÜSSIDE, Arçelik, Nokia, and Türk Telekom, aims to support the commercialization and globalization processes of 5G-based enterprises in Turkey.
Aim of this program designed to support the Production Sector Applications with 5G infrastructure and therefore program accepted applications from startups who want to develop solutions to live application issues in Arçelik's production sites.

REVOLUTIONIZING OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY WITH 5G- ENABLED INSPECTION ROBOTS: A CASE STUDY WITH ARCELIK
robolaunch Use Case
Arçelik, a leading home appliance manufacturer, wanted to ensure the highest level of occupational health and safety for its factory in Çayırova Campus.
To achieve this goal, the company teamed up with robolaunch in scope of 5G@EndTech Acceleration Program to deploy robolaunch autonomous Inspection Robot and integrate it with robolaunch's Cloud Robotics Platform to improve the safety in the facility.
The integration allowed for safety wear detection of people, real-time monitoring of both the facility and the robot's health status, teleoperation of robot for needed instant control, and instant transmission of large amounts of data, thanks to the low-latency and high-bandwidth capabilities of the private 5G infrastructure provided by Nokia.
High Level Architecture of the Case Study
Challenges
- Arçelik wanted to be able to instantly detect any occupational health and safety violation from a central point.
- Arçelik wanted to be informed instantly about any safety wear (safety helmet, safety vest, safety shoes) violation by people in the manufacturing area.
- Arçelik wanted to be assure about the ergonomics of the employees to improve the occupational health and safety.
- Çayırova Campus has many visitors every day and many people walking in the manufacturing area poses a threat to occupational health and safety.
Solutions for those Challenges
1) Occupational Health and Safety Detect
- Security patrol with autonomous navigation in facility
- Visual inspection and anomaly detection with safety wear, pose and thermal detection
- Teleoperation over robolaunch Teleoperate board
- Task assignment to robot over robolaunch Task Management board
- AI offloading to edge server for high capacity requiring operations (image processing) of robot through robolaunch Platform capabilities
2) Autonomous and Remote Virtual Tour
- Autonomous tours in facility with autonomous navigation feature
- Live video streaming with the help of 5G connection over robolaunch Dashboards to enable remote tours for facility visitors
- Audio narration of the factory during autonomous navigation for remote tours
The Inspection Robot was designed to perform occupational health and safety inspections and factory tours, providing a safer and more efficient way of monitoring the facility. The Cloud Robotics Platform offloaded compute-intensive AI operations to the edge cloud, making it possible to simplify the robot and provided instant feedback in real-time.
Thanks to 5G enabled Cloud Robotics approach, Arçelik was able to revolutionize its occupational health and safety processes and achieve new levels of efficiency and safety. The integration of the Inspection Robot with the Cloud Robotics Platform and 5G infrastructure has made it possible for Arçelik to monitor its facilities in real-time, assign tasks to the robot, and respond to any incidents instantly.
This successful collaboration between Arçelik and robolaunch demonstrates the power of 5G technology and the potential for robots to enhance occupational health and safety in the workplace.
